About DIGIPIN

Ministry of Communications

Official Government Initiative

DIGIPIN (Digital PIN) is a 10-character alphanumeric geocode developed by the Department of Posts, India. It provides a precise, user-friendly way to encode geographic coordinates that can be easily shared and decoded back to latitude/longitude pairs.

This initiative represents the foundation layer of India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for standardized, geo-coded addressing systems.

Government Initiative

🏛️ Digital Public Infrastructure for India

The Department of Posts has undertaken this initiative to establish a standardized, geo-coded addressing system across India.

Development Partnership

DIGIPIN has been developed in collaboration with prestigious institutions:

  • IIT Hyderabad - Technical development and research
  • NRSC (ISRO) - National Remote Sensing Centre expertise
  • Department of Posts - Implementation and deployment

After extensive public consultation and expert review, the DIGIPIN Grid has been finalized to provide simplified addressing solutions for seamless delivery of public and private services.

Address as a Service (AaaS)

DIGIPIN enables "Address as a Service" across the country, supporting:

  • • Emergency response services
  • • E-commerce and logistics
  • • Banking and financial services
  • • Government service delivery
  • • Postal and courier services
  • • Digital governance initiatives

Key Highlights

DIGIPIN simplifies address management and enhances service delivery accuracy, promoting a thriving geospatial ecosystem for India's digital economy.

How DIGIPIN Works

Our proprietary DIGIPIN algorithm transforms complex GPS coordinates into simple, memorable codes while maintaining precision.

Traditional Coordinates

37.7749, -122.4194

  • ❌ Hard to remember
  • ❌ Difficult to communicate verbally
  • ❌ Error-prone when typing
  • ❌ Not user-friendly

DIGIPIN Code

4P3-JK8-52C9

  • ✅ Easy to remember
  • ✅ Simple to communicate
  • ✅ Error-resistant
  • ✅ Universally accessible

The Official Algorithm

The DIGIPIN system divides the Earth into a hierarchical grid system, with each cell having a unique 10-character alphanumeric identifier. This allows precise representation of any location while maintaining simplicity and memorability for everyday use.
